In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth,
and the heavens are the work of your hands.
They will perish, but you remain (Hebrews 1:10-11, NIV)
Recently I studied the book of Hebrews and in the first chapter I was struck by the description of Jesus’ power and position in relation to all of God’s creation. Jesus is the radiance of God’s glory. He is the exact representation of God. He sustains all things by his powerful Word. He is highly exalted above all things including angels who serve him.
In particular, the phrase, “you remain,” in verses 11 and 12 stood out to me. You in this context refers to Jesus. When God laid the foundations of the earth and the heavens, Jesus was there. However, according to 2Peter 3:7-10, “The day of the Lord will come like a thief, the heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.” Isaiah describes the destruction like this, the stars will dissolve, the sky will be rolled up like a scroll, all the starry hosts will fall like withered leaves from the vine and like shriveled leaves from the fig tree (Isaiah 34:4). When all these things happen, one thing is for sure, Jesus remains. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. He is the embodiment of stability and security. He is immovable and indestructible. He remains the same and his years will never end.
How does this apply to you and me? In today’s world we put our security in material things, our houses, cars, jobs etc. Have you considered what would happen if all these things were lost due to lay off, unstable economy or natural disaster? Where do we find security when everything that we hold so dear falls apart? When our worldas we know it caves in and we have no idea how to go on?
A few years ago when I faced a personal crises that left me devastated, I had no idea how I would survive or find the strength to go on. I struggled with insecurities and depression. But Jesus came to my rescue….he rescued and walked me through the turmoil. When my world collapsed, He remained and still remains.
I have good news. Jesus Christ remains for you and me. He will never perish, the Son who radiates God’s glory, remains for ever and ever. The Son who bought my salvation and your salvation on the cross of Calvary remains immovable, indestructible, all powerful, glorious and Omnipotent…..He remains….He is the only anchor that holds when all fails.
Do you know Him? Have you put your trust in Him? Do you know this awesome Savior…He is waiting with open arms to receive you. He remains!
This song, “One thing Remains” by Jesus Culture captures the essence of this post.
